June 9, 2006 – On our own again

Note: Donna wrote this entry.

This morning we did it our way. No tour managers giving us the time to depart and no one getting us to and from our destinations. We called a cab and headed off to the Termini Station in Rome. After a cab ride that shaved off about 10 years from both of our lives, we arrived at the train station about two hours before our departure time. We of course looked for a safe haven to hide out from the gypsies. We found sanctuary in that favorite place found all over the world, McDonald’s. We had a rather uneventful 5 hour train ride to Milan and arrived around 4pm. Both of us wondered how our accommodations would compare to the hotels that Contiki had provided and were a bit anxious to have just a little more luxury. I don’t know if shock would be the right word, but neither of us were prepared for the room we saw. The room is ginormous. We have a queen-sized bed, a desk, a dining table, two couches, a nice walk-in closet, and a luxurious bathroom. No toilet in the shower this time!!! Maybe I could be a travel agent after all. Andrew repeatedly gave me my due props for the great accommodations that I had booked for us.

We decided to take it easy today. We scavenged for food, finding only one place open at 5 pm. We took our food back to the hotel and have been there ever since. We watched the first match of the World Cup (Germany vs. Costa Rica) and took a much needed nap. Tomorrow we will have to leave the room to see a little of Milan.
